Nižnie Narykary
Coordinates: 63°11'N 64°56'E
On the bank of the Narykary river branch, there are two settlements: Verkhnie (Upper) Narykary (Mansi ali-ńariχumit, Khanty wŭt ńar-jↄχ kurt) and Nižnie (Lower) Narykary (Mansi luji-ńariχumit Khanty ńar-jↄχ kurt). Further down from these, the river branch flows into the Malaja (Little) Ob’ river. The Mansi named Jevlakhov, Jenizorov, Nepkin and Jarkin belong to the local, ńariχumit māχum ’people of Narykary’ group.
The village was first mentioned in Russian documents in the 17th century, when the 12 towns of the Koda principality were listed. At this time, the traces of two Ostyak fortresses were visible on the right bank of the river, which the Ostyaks used to call nari-wↄš, which is where the name of Narykary originates from. The -kar element of the place name has the meaning ’town’ in the Komi-Zyrian language. The founders of the town may have been Komi.
